If you’ve spent any time browsing Pinterest, you know that it’s all about the beautiful pictures.  After all, that’s what Pinterest is – a collection of visual images to inspire you.  And, we all know the whole point of using Pinterest as a brand, business owner, and blogger is to get people to click on that beautiful image and visit your website.

How to Create Pinnable Images for Pinterest

Why You Should Add Your Own Pins to Pinterest:

Are you new to Pinterest?  Did you just launch a business or website?  You need to be adding your own pins to Pinterest!  Pinterest will help you:

Pinterest’s preferred image ratio is 2:3.  The minimum width of a pin is 600 pixels and the maximum is 735 pixels.   A pinnable image should be 600 x 900 pixels or 735 x 1102 pixels which are both 2:3 ratio.

So, what does that mean?  Tall, vertical images look best on Pinterest.  We also recommend creating vertical 1:2 images (1000 x 2000) and A/B testing to see what works for your audience.

Tools to Create Pinterest Pins

I LOVE using Canva to create Pinterest images.  It’s free and they have a Pinterest image template that is set to 735 x 1102 pixels so your images will be the correct size to pin.  All you have to do is upload your image, add text, and click download.

Picmonkey also has a Pinterest template to help create pinnable images and it’s also free.

Pinnable Images

There are a few different types of images that do well on Pinterest and there are a few things that you should include with each pinnable image:

  1. Great Image – you have to start with a clear image to grab your reader’s attention.
  2. Text – Add a title of the image or the title of your blog post, product, or article.
  3. Website URL – Include your website’s URL so they know who the pin belongs to

Feature Image –  Take one great image and create a feature image for your website.  Add the title and website URL.

Collage Image – Take two images from your website and create a collage with the title in the center.  This is great if you have two images that you like or two smaller images that you want to combine into one large pinnable image.

Turn a Square Image into a Pinnable Image – Sometimes you need to turn a square image into a pinnable image.  This is simple to do.  Just add a background and text to make the image the ideal size for Pinterest.  This is perfect for pinning Etsy shop images and smaller images.

Round Up Pinnable Images – Create round up images quickly using four images.  Add a title to the center and you’re done!  A great way to add a collection of images to Pinterest to highlight what your brand has to offer your audience.

How to Create Engaging Pins

  • Start with high quality, vertical images.  This is the most important step!
  • Include a text overlay. Tell a story with your overlay and help pinners understand what they are looking at.
  • Use subtle branding.  There was a time when we were told to create pins with similar text, colors, and branding styles but we’ve found over the past few months that Pinterest wants you to be more creative.  Try a few different styles of pins. We recommend making your watermark your branding, but don’t be afraid to try new things. Remember this is a visual search engine, you want to capture the eye of more than one type of follower.
  • Use bold fonts that are easy to read and contrasting colors to make the text stand out.

Tips for Creating Pins

  • Rule of “3” When Creating New Pins for Old Posts – To Create New Fresh pins, You do not have to create a new post. Remember the rule of “3”  for New Fresh Pins. To be considered fresh, a pin needs to have the following 3 things unique to any other pin you have previously pinned: a unique image, a unique title, a unique description
  • Pin Titles – The title of the pin does not have to match the title used on your website.  Create fresh pins using various titles.
  • Video, Story and Static Pins – We highly recommend sharing all 3 types of pins – video, story, and static pins. Static pins are doing great and probably the #1 driver for click through rate but the accounts that are doing story pins and video pins alongside their static pins are actually getting the most engagement.
  • Pin Images in Posts –  Whatever images you are using in your pins, Pinterest needs to see some form of that image in your post. So even if you are cropping and cutting, the image in some form needs to be on your blog.
