Summer will be here before we know it and it’s the perfect time of year for a little spring cleaning! But, we’re not talking about cleaning or organizing our home. We want to spend the next few weeks spring cleaning our Pinterest account.

Spring Cleaning Your Pinterest Account

For many of us Pinterest brings in a large amount of our daily traffic so it’s important to spend time cleaning and organizing our Pinterest account to optimize content and ultimately drive more traffic.  These steps are especially helpful for those of us who have been using Pinterest for years but will also benefit those just starting with Pinterest.

How to Clean Your Pinterest Account

Step 1 – Optimize Your Profile

We all have heard by now that keywords are important.  We’re all busy optimizing our blog posts and adding relevant keywords for SEO and that also applies to our Pinterest profile.

  • Take a look at your profile picture.  Is it a good picture?
  • Does your profile description include keywords that are relevant to your brand?  Your profile should explain what you do and how you can help people.

Step 2 – Update Board Names

Do your group boards include keywords?  When Pinterest first came out I can remember my board names being cute and witty but we don’t want that for our brand.  Board names need to be straight to the point with specific keywords. This is an easy fix and shouldn’t take long.

Step 3 – Board Descriptions

Board descriptions need to be optimized to include keywords as well.  This isn’t new information so take a look again through all your board descriptions and make sure they include keywords describing the content found on the board.  Use Tailwind to see which of your boards are under-performing and consider updating those board descriptions.

Step 4 – Organize Pinterest Boards

Board order is important for people visiting your profile and it’s especially important for your brand.  You want your website board to be the very first board and then all your brand boards should be listed next.  The top two rows of your account get the most engagement so keep that in mind when arranging your boards.  This is the perfect time to take a look at how your boards are performing.  Tailwind is a great resource for this.

You only want high-performing brand boards showing on your Pinterest account.

What does this mean?

  • Archive or make your off-brand boards secret.
  • Move your top performing boards to the top of your account.
  • Move your group boards to the bottom.
  • Arrange your seasonal boards. For example, now is a good time to move summer boards to the top of your account.

Step 5 – Create New Pins and Boards

Now is also a good time to create new pins and boards.  Start with your top performing pins and your most popular blog posts.  I recommend keeping a consistent design with similar fonts and color schemes along with your logo or website URL.  This will make your pins recognizable which is always a good thing.

Take a look at your larger boards and see how you can turn them into smaller, more specific boards.  For example, if you have a dessert board, you might want to create a board for each of the following categories: cookies, cakes, no-bake desserts, and brownies.  I think it’s important to have a minimum of 25 personal board that are relevant to your brand so take some time to add more boards to your account.  This will give you more boards to pin your content to.
